The Khayelitsha 10 to appear in Court this morning

11 January 2012

The Khayelitsha 10, arrested during the protest outside new Khayelitsha Hospital yesterday morning will appear in Khayelitsha Magistrate court today at 09h00.

The community has vowed to intensify their protest until their members are released.

This is another sad day in South Africa where the state responds to peaceful civil disobedience with brutality. It must be put on record that the reason residents were so upset at yesterday’s protest was because government leaders failed to give an honest and transparent account of the employment situation and also because subsequently resident’s C.V.’s were found in the dustbin. Threat to picket new Khayelitsha hospital

Note on article: It should be noted that the Khayelitsha Development Forum is a body of political appointees of DA and ANC Ward Councillors, is not democratically elected, and therefore does not represent the interests of the Khayelitsha community. The Mandela Park Backyarders are an elected community group that conducts democratic AGMs every year.

Nombulelo Damba – NewAge
Jan 10 2012 9:54AM

The newly built Khayelitsha District Hospital has not even opened its doors but was the site of protests over job allocations on Monday morning.

About 100 people from Khayelitsha wards 94 and 97, mobilised by the Mandela Park backyarders organisation, gathered from 6am to demand clarity as to why job opportunities at the 300-bed hospital appeared to have been filled before they had even been advertised.

Khayelitsha residents arrested for protest outside new Khayelitsha Hospital

10 January 2011
Statement on behalf of protesting Khayelitsha residents

Earlier this morning a group of Khayelitsha residents showed up in front of the brand new Khayelitsha Hopsital to protest against the refusal of hospital authorities to hire local people from amongst the recent estimated 70,000 job applications. Estimates are that only 2%-10% of staff hired at the hospital are from the Khayelitsha area.

Almost 100 people converged in front of the hospital. They closed the road and burned tyres in order to show government and hospital management that they are serious about their demands. Often, when we protest in quieter ways, we get ignored. We have realised that we must engage in peaceful civil disobedience to get our voices heard. Continue reading

New Khayelitsha Hospital under threat: Residents vow to protest and will prevent employees from working on site tomorrow until their grievances are heard!

8 January 2012
Press statement on behalf of Khayelitsha residents

From 6am tomorrow morning, Khayelitsha residents will be protesting outside the new Khayelitsha Hospital. Tonight, we will be mobilising to that effect. We have had enough! Kwanele!

The Community of Mandela Park (Ward 94 & 97) gathered this afternoon to find out the truth behind the devastating rumors regarding employment at the new Khayelitsha Hospital. Residents have accused Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) leadership and Ward Councillors of failing to give proper direction in terms of employment opportunities for the area. These politicians seem to only interested in grabbing available opportunities for themselves. Continue reading

We continue our call for Madikizela to resign

1 August 2011
Mandela Park Backyarders Press Statement

A few days ago, Madikizela attacked the Backyarders in a press statement after we found new evidence of corruption and calls for his resignation were published in the Cape Times.

First and foremost, it is important to give a clear picture that will clarify our position as the Mandela Park Backyarders for the benefit of those who don’t follow the housing crisis in Mandela Park.

Our response Continue reading

July 28 2011 at 12:28pm – Cape Times – Shanti Aboobaker, Leila Samodien and Lauren Isaacs

THEY came en masse, bearing placards and chanting as they gathered on the steps of the Western Cape High Court yesterday.

This as about 300 members of the Mitchells Plain Backyarders Association – supported by the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign, Communities for Social Change, the Mandela Park Backyarders and Abahlali baseMjondolo associations – waited outside the court to hear the outcome of the case in which they face being removed from land they were occupying illegally.

This week the occupants submitted their answering papers in the matter that sees them pitted against the City of Cape Town. Continue reading

Media: Tafelsig backyarders case postponed

AEC Note: (1) There were closer to 1,000 people at the march, rather than just 400 estimated in this article. (2) Also, the march, while it did not have a permit, was a legal march according to the Gatherings Act.

Mitchells Plain was today postponed by the Western Cape High Court to August 30.

Judge Nonkosi Saba postponed the matter as the respondents (backyarders) had only filed their papers on Monday. As a result the city could not file their reply in time for today’s court date.

Sheldon Magardie from Lawyers for Human Rights, said the LHR was representing 16 of the 4000 backyarders who were evicted from city-owned land in Tafelsig on May 14. The 16 respondents are those who have remained on the land. Continue reading
